I’m Dr. Janet McMullen. My students call me Dr. Mc (pronounced “Mac”). I teach Mass Communication courses at The University of North Alabama.
Over the last 25+ years, former students have said they miss the our class discussions on media and current events, ethics, politics, and other current issues. Some of the best conversations take place outside of the classroom — in my office, the hall way or the study sessions in my home. I often get emails asking, “Dr. Mc, what do think about….?” This is a place where those discussions can continue.
I love to challenge my students to think, and I love the way they challenge me. Our ever-more-complex society demands that we keep growing and learning. We must be informed and think critically to engage the ideas and issues that face us and our children. Citizenship and humanity demand that of us.
On these pages, I’ll try to provide useful information, resources and perspective. My primary interest is examining how media technologies and content affect who we are as individuals and as a society. That includes our ability to learn, to interact with others, our understanding of morality, and our concept of God. While I am a committed Christian, media influence the perception and understanding of all faiths and ideologies.
Life isn’t all about concern and controversy, so there will be some pages about my family, our interests and activities, and of course, those much-requested study-session recipes. (Yes, I’ll share the chocolate chip cookies recipe…)
Right now, I’m planning to post each week unless events or inspiration demand more frequency. I’m looking forward to reading your comments and seeing how the dialogue unfolds. I’m a little new at this, so I hope you’ll bear with me.
Dr. Mc
